In My Mailbox {4}

Sunday, February 6, 2011

I had a really good book week and I am pretty excited to share with everyone, and to hear what you got too, so feel free to leave a comment after linking to your IMM post or just leave it in the comments! Also, this week's IMM post comes with a new blog layout. I'd been using a standard blogger one for awhile trying to find one that I felt fit the blog, so let me know what you think about the new layout! Now time for my books I am so excited, here's what I got in my mailbox.

Bought
My lovely town has the GIANT problem of no longer having a bookstore. So if you want a book you have to try your luck with walmart or drive 45 minutes to the nearest Borders or Barnes and Noble. So I went with my mom to Walmart to do grocery shopping and I tried my luck with finding Delirium. Well needless to say it didn't work out, but there were a lot of newer books that I was wanting so I got one.

Nightshade - Andrea Cremer

I've been hearing and seeing this everywhere and the cover is just flawless. The picture does not do it justice. Plus I'm on this wolf kick so it sounds perfect for me. Here's the synopsis from Goodreads.

"Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything— including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?"

Library
So I took some of the books back from last week and decided to only get two, because I have a bunch of other books to be reading. But you know me, I just couldn't help myself.

Blue Moon- Alyson Noel

So after finishing Evermore I just couldn't wait to get the second book and I rushed out to the library. I am so unbelievably excited to read this book. Here's the synopsis from Goodreads, if you haven't read the first one there may be some spoilers.

"Eager to learn everything she can about her new abilities as an Immortal, Ever turns to her beloved Damen to show her the way. But just as her powers are increasing, Damen’s are waning.  In an attempt to save him, Ever travels to the magical dimension of Summerland, where she learns the secrets of Damen’s tortured past; a past which he has always kept hidden from her. But in her quest to cure Damen, Ever discovers an ancient text that details the workings of time. Now Ever must chose between turning back the past and saving her family from the accident that claimed their lives—or staying in the present and saving Damen, who grows sicker every day.."

Shiver- Maggie Stiefvater

I've been hearing about this series for some time now and when I saw it at the library it just jumped out at me. I knew I had to get it so I could see about it myself. Here's the synopsis from Goodreads.

"the cold.
Grace has spent years watching the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—watches back. He feels deeply familiar to her, but she doesn't know why.

the heat.
Sam has lived two lives. As a wolf, he keeps the silent company of the girl he loves. And then, for a short time each year, he is human, never daring to talk to Grace...until now.

the shiver.
For Grace and Sam, love has always been kept at a distance. But once it's spoken, it cannot be denied. Sam must fight to stay human—and Grace must fight to keep him—even if it means taking on the scars of the past, the fragility of the present, and the impossibility of the future."

Insight - Jamie Magee

This book sounds pretty good. I like anything that has to do with Zodiac, and especially with the new astrological sign, this book seems like a new twist to them. The second one is also coming out this summer, so if all goes well I'll check it out as well. Here's the synopsis from Goodreads.

"Before that fateful summer night, Willow had balanced the insight of emotion, and the vivid images. That night, the figure in her nightmare marked her wrist with a star, giving her father no choice but to tell Willow a family secret that would abruptly change life, as she knew it, forever. Before Willow had time to absorb the shock of her father's secret, her soul mate that had shared every stunning dream with her, found her, and darkness captured her closest friends. In order to save them, she must weave through broken myths and the undeniable power of the Zodiac. In the end, Willow discovers that at the moment of our birth we are all given a divine gift."

Audiobook

Tell Me A Secret - Holly Cupala

So this book somehow ended up for free on an iTunes podcast this week, and I can't seem to pass up an opportunity like this. Plus, it sounds like a good book, and fits into the Whisper Stories In My Ear challange I'm participating it. Here's the Synopsis from Goodreads.

"Tell me a secret, and I'll tell you one…

In the five years since her bad-girl sister Xanda’s death, Miranda Mathison has wondered about the secret her sister took to the grave, and what really happened the night she died. Now, just as Miranda is on the cusp of her dreams—a best friend to unlock her sister’s world, a ticket to art school, and a boyfriend to fly her away from it all—Miranda has a secret all her own.

Then two lines on a pregnancy test confirm her worst fears. Stripped of her former life, Miranda must make a choice with tremendous consequences and finally face her sister’s demons and her own.

In this powerful debut novel, stunning new talent Holly Cupala illuminates the dark struggle of a girl who must let go of her past to find a way into her own future."

The Last Song - Nicholas Sparks

I've been debating reading this book for some time and I saw it at Walmart while we were shopping, and it was an audiobook. I looked through almost all of them and this really was the only one I was willing to read, they had no young adult books. So I finally gave in and got it, and here's the synopsis from Goodreads.

"Her parents' divorce left 17-year-old Veronica Miller embittered and confused. Three years later, "Ronnie" still seethes with anger toward her father, a musician and teacher who has abandoned hectic New York City for the quiet beach town of Wilmington, North Carolina. Nevertheless, she reluctantly agrees to her mother's altruistic plan that for the good of all concerned, she should visit her estranged father in his new home. As the story of The Last Song unfolds, novelist Nicholas Sparks weaves his magic, threading together the intricate story of three very different people tied inextricably together."

For Review

Cryer's Cross - Lisa McMann

I am honestly freaking out. I have been dying for this book to come out, and here I am with it early ( I received it on Friday). I know it's not super early but it's early enough for me to be so excited I did a happy dance. Here's the synopsis from Goodreads so you can see why I'm so excited.

"The community of Cryer’s Cross, Montana (population 212) is distraught when high school freshman Tiffany disappears without a trace. Already off-balance due to her OCD, 16-year-old Kendall is freaked out seeing Tiffany’s empty desk in the one-room school house, but somehow life goes on... until Kendall's boyfriend Nico also disappears, and also without a trace. Now the town is in a panic. Alone in her depression and with her OCD at an all-time high, Kendall notices something that connects Nico and Tiffany: they both sat at the same desk. She knows it's crazy, but Kendall finds herself drawn to the desk, dreaming of Nico and wondering if maybe she, too, will disappear...and whether that would be so bad. Then she begins receiving graffiti messages on the desk from someone who can only be Nico. Can he possibly be alive somewhere? Where is he? And how can Kendall help him? The only person who believes her is Jacian, the new guy she finds irritating...and attractive. As Kendall and Jacian grow closer, Kendall digs deeper into Nico's mysterious disappearance only to stumble upon some ugly—and deadly—local history. Kendall is about to find out just how far the townspeople will go to keep their secrets buried."

The Education of Hailey Kendrick - Eileen Cook

I've been wanting to get my hands on a copy of this for awhile so I'm pretty excited to get my hands on it now even though it's been out for awhile. Here's the synopsis from Goodreads.

"Hailey Kendrick always does exactly what's expected of her. She has the right friends, dates the perfect boy, gets good grades, and follows all the rules. But one night, Hailey risks everything by breaking a very big rule in a very public way...and with a very unexpected partner in crime. Hailey gets caught, but her accomplice does not, and Hailey takes the fall for both of them.
Suddenly, Hailey's perfect life--and her reputation--are blowing up in her face. Her friends are all avoiding her. Her teachers don't trust her. Her boyfriend won't even speak to her for long enough to tell her that she's been dumped. They say honesty is the best policy--but some secrets are worth keeping, no matter the cost. Or are they?"

Choker - Elizabeth Woods

This is another book that's been out for about a month now that I have been wanting to get my hands on. I'm pretty excited to read it, and the cover is just so pretty! Here's the synopsis from Goodreads.

"Sixteen-year-old Cara Lange has been a loner ever since she moved away from her best and only friend, Zoe, years ago. She eats lunch with the other girls from the track team, but they're not really her friends. Mostly she spends her time watching Ethan Gray from a distance, wishing he would finally notice her, and avoiding the popular girls who call her "Choker" after a humiliating incident in the cafeteria. Then one day Cara comes home to find Zoe waiting for her. Zoe's on the run from problems at home, and Cara agrees to help her hide. With her best friend back, Cara's life changes overnight. Zoe gives her a new look and new confidence, and next thing she knows, she's getting invited to parties and flirting with Ethan. Best of all, she has her BFF there to confide in. But just as quickly as Cara's life came together, it starts to unravel. A girl goes missing in her town, and everyone is a suspect—including Ethan. Worse still, Zoe starts behaving strangely, and Cara begins to wonder what exactly her friend does all day when she's at school. You're supposed to trust your best friend no matter what, but what if she turns into a total stranger?"

The Lo-Down - Lo Bosworth

I'm not sure how I feel about this one yet. I was pretty excited to see that Lo, who I actually got my grade school nickname from, had written a book. But i'm not sure how I feel about the content of the book just yet, because it's not an actual story from what I get, it's about the ups and downs of relationships. But it's also about the stars from Laguna Beach and The Hills so it could be pretty interesting to me. Here's what is on Goodreads.

"A new book about dating do's and don'ts filled with real life stories from the star of "The Hills," Lo Bosworth!"

  1. Wow, you have a really great haul this week! None of the Wal Marts around me have that kind of selection. I have a TON of bookstores around me, but prefer to buy everything off Amazon because it's way cheaper plus free shipping with my Student Prime account! You should check that out!

  2. My walmart doesn't have that big of one either. I only bought Nightshade and The Last Song there. I really need to make the trip 45 minutes away for Delirium. I also had a free prime account but it wouldn't apply to anything I was trying to buy so I cancelled it.

  11. Great IMM! I was lucky enough to read The Lo-Down back in December and I honestly enjoyed it. I know that non-fiction is iffy sometimes but I found it worked for Lo's book. -C Oh, and P.S. I agree with Moonlight Gleam. The Book Depository is where it's at!

  15. Great books! I loved Nightshade and Shiver!

I am NOT a fan of Alyson Noel but I'm glad you're enjoying her books.

So sorry to hear about your bookstore dilemma! My town doesn't have the best one either but I work in a major city that has plenty. I also don't buy from brick and mortar very often but sometimes I like to cruise the shelves just for fun. :)

    Enjoy your books!
